Cruel Things People Post & Support for South Korea

I’m writing this post about something I saw last night that has made me extremely uncomfortable all day, and it’s something that I feel needs to be addressed whether or not that person will ever see this post.

I’m sure most if not all of you are aware of the ferry accident that has devastated Korea and the world. Current numbers say that there are 25 people pronounced dead and hundreds still missing–the vast majority of which are kids. Teenagers who were going on a school trip, and now may never get the chance to grow up.

So:

Dear Person Who Wrote That Inhumane Tweet,

If you are more concerned with the release of your k-pop group’s music video than the missing lives of HUNDREDS of kids, I think you have a much bigger problem on your hands.

Don’t tell me you merely want to support your favorite group, because if I may be so bold, I highly doubt they’d want support from someone like you. What you said was appalling and it makes me sad. For those children whose lives have been lost, and for you, who apparently has nothing better to do than to complain about something that is so trivial in the grand scheme of the world.

If you have that much time on your hands, why not put it toward something productive? Maybe you don’t care about the ferry accident in South Korea because it doesn’t affect you, but what about volunteering at a homeless shelter for people in your community, or a soup kitchen even?

Just keep in mind that once something’s been put on the internet it is there forever. Maybe what you said was intended as a joke (though I can’t think of a single person who would think it is funny), and maybe you have already forgotten about it; maybe you’ve gone about your life without a single second thought dedicated to those cruel words you posted. Maybe you’ll never regret saying those words. If that’s true, I think that would be the saddest thing that I’ve ever heard.

Dear Families of Those Children Missing, Found, or Passed/ People Who Have Been Affected By This Tragedy,

I’m sorry that there is nothing I can do for you but to tell you that I support you. Please know that people like the one who posted such an awful statement are NOT the majority. So many people in this world support you and hope for the best outcome possible. I have never been in your position, so I cannot imagine what it’s like. All I can tell you is that I’m sure, wherever your children and loved ones end up, they will be loved; whether that’s here on earth or in Heaven.

Please do not give up hope. And please do not let the unkind words of those people with sad lives darken that hope. They don’t matter anyway.
